Why the Pickleball Industry Needs to Stop Lying to Its Hardest-Working Players

You drill three times a week.
You bought the paddle.
You watch the pros.
You even signed up for that strategy workshop.

But you still walk off the court losing to players who “just play all day.”

Let me say what most coaches won’t:

You’re not getting better.
You’re just getting better at drilling.

The Pickleball industry has sold a lie.
They made you believe that more reps = more wins.
That repetition alone is the ladder to the next level.
That if you just hit enough third shot drops or dinks or resets, the results will come.

But here’s what they don’t say:
You can drill for years and still not know how to win.
Because drilling doesn’t teach timing.
It doesn’t teach when to reset or counter or isolate.
It doesn’t teach how to think under pressure when the score is tight.

I coach a lot of high-level rec players who have solid mechanics.
What they don’t have is game IQ.

They get stuck in drill mode.
They look great warming up.
But as soon as things get chaotic or off script—they panic, they guess, or they overhit.

That’s not a technique issue.
That’s a training failure.

Here’s the truth:

  • Drills are only as valuable as the decisions that follow them.
  • Muscle memory is useless if you don’t know when to use it.
  • You can have perfect footwork and still lose if your brain hasn’t been trained to process the game.

I’ve had players say to me,

“I work harder than everyone I play with—why do I keep losing?”

It’s because hard work in the wrong direction is still off course.
That’s not your fault.
That’s bad coaching.
That’s lazy programming.

At Night Train Pickleball, we’ve thrown that model out.

We coach decision-making.
We coach resets, reads, and patterns.
We teach players how to play smarter—not just hit cleaner.

That’s what separates the ones who win from the ones who just “look good” warming up.

So next time someone tells you to “just drill more”…
ask them to explain what to do when the third shot drop gets countered.
Or when your partner panics.
Or when the other team stacks and pressures your weak side.

And if they don’t have an answer—
You’ve just found the problem.

Drilling is part of the work.
But it’s not the whole thing.

You want to level up?

Start training for real play.
Not just practice.

You’ve drilled enough.
Now it’s time to think.
